Why people book it
Infrared sauna benefits, in brief.
Recovery after training
Active men who sat in a far-infrared sauna for 30 minutes after a hard endurance workout had more jump power half an hour later than when they simply rested (SpringerPlus, 2015).
Heart health research
A Finnish study that followed 2,315 men for about 20 years linked sauna sessions four to seven times a week with fewer fatal heart events than once a week (JAMA Internal Medicine, 2015). That research used traditional saunas; infrared studies are smaller.
Sleep and stress
In a survey of 482 regular sauna users, relaxation and stress relief topped the reasons people went, and 83.5% reported sleep benefits (Complementary Therapies in Medicine, 2019).
Research, not a promise. Results vary, and none of this is medical advice.
What it's like here
Inside the San Diego infrared sauna.
Infrared heat is gentler on the way in than a gym sauna. The air stays dry and the warmth comes from panels around you, so it builds slowly instead of hitting you at the door. Ours runs up to about 170°F.
It shares a quiet room with the plunge and your shower. Pick a light color with the remote, put your own playlist on the speakers, and stay for as long as feels good. There's room on the bench for three, so it works with a training partner as well as it does solo.

First time in an infrared sauna?
- Start with a round of 10 to 15 minutes and add time on later visits.
- Drink water before you come and after you finish.
- Wear a swimsuit or light shorts. It's a private room, so whatever's comfortable works.
- Feel lightheaded? Step out and sit down. You don't have to finish a round.
- Pregnant, or have a heart condition? Talk to your doctor before you book.

Sessions and prices
Pick a length, then a time.
Every length includes the whole suite. For a sauna-first visit, 55 minutes gives you two long rounds with time to cool off between them.
Planning to come back? Packs bring a session down to $19.95. See packs and memberships.

Who comes, and when
When people book the sauna.
- Early
Before work
Doors open at 5am on weekdays, early enough to sweat, shower and still beat the traffic on the 8.
- After training
Straight from the gym
Train at Self Made? The suite is in the same building, so there's no second drive.
- Gray days
June gloom
When the marine layer sits over Point Loma, 25 minutes of dry heat is a fair trade.
- With a friend
Two on the bench
Book 85 minutes, add a guest for $20, and take turns between the heat and the plunge.

Sauna FAQ
Sauna questions.
Want to ask about the sauna before you book? Call (858) 305-2226.
How hot is the San Diego infrared sauna?
Up to about 170°F. It feels milder than that number suggests, because infrared heat is dry and warms you directly instead of heating thick, steamy air.
Can I book only the sauna?
Every booking is the full suite, so the plunge and shower come with it. Skip them if you only came for heat. It's your session.
How long should I stay in?
It's self-guided. A lot of people start with rounds of 10 to 15 minutes and build from there on later visits. Get out whenever you've had enough, and drink water.
Can two people use the sauna at once?
Yes. Add a guest for $20 when you book and share the bench.
What do I wear in the sauna?
Most people wear a swimsuit or light gym clothes. It's your room, so it's your call. We supply the towels.
Is infrared sauna good for you?
The research is encouraging. A small far-infrared study found better muscle recovery after hard endurance training (SpringerPlus, 2015), and a long Finnish study linked frequent traditional sauna use with fewer fatal heart events (JAMA Internal Medicine, 2015). It isn't a treatment for any condition, so check with your doctor if you have one.
